I'm getting a "permission denied" error when I try and edit a file. How can I change permissions?

Our servers use a special and extremely secure permissions scheme that allows each site to run apache processes as its own user.  This allows the web server to write to the same files as your FTP client and this scheme protects your site from other sites on the same server.
 However, occasionally web site software will change your file permissions in an attempt to make your site extra secure which can prevent your FTP/SSH/SFTP user from being able to write to your web site files.   When this happens you'll likely see the "Permission Denied" error message.

Here is how to fix a Permission Denied error:

For Shared Hosting accounts:
  • Navigate to Site Hosting & Email -> yourwebsite.com Manage Web Site
  • When viewing your list of web site details (document root, php version, etc) click the File Permissions Reset link
Done!
For VPS accounts:
  • Navigate to VPS -> yourwebsite.com Manage -> Websites
  • When viewing your list of web site details (document root, php version, etc) click the File Permissions Reset link
Done!
Now your web site and your FTP/SSH/SFTP user should be able to write to the same files.
